AGENDA 21, BIODIVERSITY WEEK

GREAT JOB MARÍA! Here is a video of María talking about Bilbao's biodiversity and the project we did.

THIS WEEK WE WILL HAVE A SCIENCE IMMERSIONWEEK THANKS TO AGENDA 21: BIODIVERSITY
BIODIVERSITY is variety of life, different living things of an area . You can study biodiversity within a pond ecosystem or a neighborhood park, in this case we are studying Bilbao's biodiversity. Biodiversity is extremely important to people and the health of ecosystems, we have to TAKE CARE of our nature.

WE ARE GOING TO LEARN ABOUT BILBAO'S BIODIVERSITY AND ABOVE ALL, ABOUT A VERY SPECIAL BIRD:

                                                        GREAT TIT
Great Tits are birds of woodland (forests), parks and gardens where they nest in holes in trees but are also happy to use nestboxes as substitutes.

We can find them in  Europe, the Middle East, Central and Northern Asia, and parts of North Africa

How to identify
Tits are small birds. The size of these birds is between 10cm (Coal Tit) -  15cm  (Great Tit).
Tits have a black head, white cheeks, green back, yellow belly and black stripe in the breast. Tail and wings are a bluey- grey. The tail has white feathers and the wing has a white stripe.  It is a really colorful bird. Females have less glossy caps and less black on the breast.

How do they reproduce?

PERIOD: Egg laying starts between late March and early July.
EGGS  - 5 to 11 eggs are laid.  The eggs are white with red spots
 INCUBATION  – 13 to 14 days.
NESTLINGS FLEDGE- after 18-21 days

Where to find them around us

Great Tit love insects like flies, spiders, cockroaches, ants, bees… but also love to eat berries and seed in winter. If you would like to feed them you can give them fruits, peanuts, coconut… they like a lot of food!

BUT THE GREAT TIT IS THREATEN BY DEFORESTATION, POLLUTION AND GLOBAL WARMING. WE NEED GREEN PLACES TO PROVIDE THESE LITTLE BIRDS A PERFECT HABITAT TO LIVE.
LET'S TAKE CARE OF OUR NATURE!
